About This License

Master Electrician can install, maintain, alter, repair any wire, cable, conduit, raceway, fixture or equipment that transmits, transforms, or uses electrical energy. This license includes supervision of an apprentice.

Journeyperson Electrician can perform all of the same work as a master electrician while under the supervision of a master electrician. This license includes supervision of an apprentice.

Requirements to Obtaining Your License

To be eligible for licensure as a master electrician, an applicant shall:

  • have been licensed as, and working as, a journeyman electrician under this chapter for at least two years; or
  • have had comparable experience and training, within or without this state, acceptable to the board; and
  • pass an examination to the satisfaction of the board.

To be eligible for licensure as a journeyman electrician an applicant shall:

  • provide verification by the Vermont apprenticeship council of completion of an apprenticeship in electrical wiring which included both instruction and practice in work processes; or
  • have had equivalent training and acceptable to the board; and
  • pass an examination to the satisfaction of the board.

Applying For Your License

Applications can for licensure can be obtained by calling the Vermont Electrician’s Licensing Board 1-802-479-7564.

The master license has a fee of $150 while the journeyman fee is $115.

Exam Details

  • After you have been approved to take the exam, contact ICC at 1-877-782-3926.
  • The master exam has 105 questions and a time limit of 4 hours.
  • The journeyman exam has 90 questions and a time limit of 4 hours.
  • Topics on both examinations include service transformers and equipment, wiring methods, conductors, control devices, motors and generators, plan reading and analysis, local amendments, and fire alarms.
