About This License

A "Journeyperson" means any person, other than a master, who, as a principal occupation, is engaged as an employee of, or otherwise working under the direction of, a master in the design, installation, and repair of plumbing, mechanical, HVAC, refrigeration, sheet metal, or hydronic systems, as applicable.

"Master" means any person who works in the planning or superintending of the design, installation, or repair of plumbing, mechanical, HVAC, refrigeration, sheet metal, or hydronic systems and is otherwise lawfully qualified to conduct the business of plumbing, mechanical, HVAC, refrigeration, sheet metal, or hydronic systems, and who is familiar with the laws and rules governing the same.

To be eligible to sit for an examination, an applicant must first complete a state of Iowa Examination Candidate Application. Journeyperson exam candidates must have either (1) completed a minimum of 42 months in a Dept. of Labor registered apprenticeship program; or (2) have at least four years of experience prior to January 1, 2010. Master exam candidates must have either (1) been previously licensed as a journeyperson and have two years of journeyperson work experience in the applicable discipline; or (2) been previously licensed as master in the applicable discipline in another state or local jurisdiction.

  • IA Master HVAC/Refrigeration with Gas examinations have 100 questions, a 4 hour time limit, and a passing score of 75%.
  • IA Journeyperson HVAC/Refrigeration with Gas examinations have 75 questions, a 3 hour time limit, and a passing score of 75%.
  • IA Master Mechanical with Gas examinations have 100 questions, a 4 hour time limit, and a passing score of 75%.
  • IA Journeyperson Mechanical with Gas examinations have 75 questions, a 2 hour time limit, and a passing score of 75%.
