About This License

A Home Inspector is a person licensed to conduct an examination and written evaluation of two or more specific components of a residential building, as set forth in Section 20-490, Connecticut General Statutes.

Requirements to Obtaining your License

  • Have completed high school or equivalent
  • 40 hours of approved training
  • Apply as in Intern Home Inspector
  • Conduct 100 supervised inspections; the first ten must be directly supervised
  • Pass the State Examination

This course covers Reports, Exteriors, Roofing, Structure, Insulation, Ventilation, Interiors, Electrical, Heating, Plumbing, Business Practices, Confined Spaces, PPE, Energy Efficiency, and Fire Protection/Prevention. The course includes over 600 practice test questions based on the National Electrical Code and International Residential Code. Recommended reading: Principles of Home Inspection: Systems and Standards 3rd Edition. The course also covers the 2015 International Residential Code, Connecticut Contractors Guide to Business, Law and Project Management, and Carpentry and Building Construction.

  • 70% required to pass
  • $65 for one portion, or $130 for both portions

Continuing Education

20 continuing education hours every 24 months including a mandatory, 3 hour course on current home inspection legislation, licensing laws and regulations.
